Some members of my extended family are not as liberal as I am. They view capitalism in a more centrist way than I do. I would claim they view it through rose-colored glasses, but that’s my bias. They are always ready with a story of how someone had a great idea and turned it into great wealth. The details are unimportant, the story is always the same, the hero started with nothing but a good idea and now he’s rich. The implied, anyone can do it, is clear from the telling.
During a recent lunch with my cousins the story was told and the sentence, “So you see all you need is a great idea and you’ve got it made,” was uttered.
“I’ve had some great ideas, and I don’t have it made,” I said. “A few years ago I had a dandy.”
My cousins were intrigued. I could see it in their eyes. Here’s an idea Norm didn’t capitalize on maybe we can make a buck on it. “So what’s this great idea you didn’t turn into gold,” one said.
I smiled, “back in 2000 I thought it was a good idea not to vote for George Bush, but I still haven’t made a dime off it.”
Maybe not, but you’ve had eight good years of whining.
